Why do I need to have a child support order?

Well, if you have a paternity case or a divorce case, child support is generally set when one child lives with one parent most of the time. You don’t need a child support order if you share custody. However, if one of the parents goes on public assistance, the government may very well calculate the child support order and start requiring the other parent to pay it.
